GL-LS-12

Was ist also schief gelaufen?

GL-LS-12

The Glow Lamp Lab Sample 12, or in short GL-LS-12, is a GL-LS-4-based glow lamp construction that employs stainless steel electrodes next to the standard 9mm soda lime tubing and Dumet wire. The filling was intended to be air at 15mbar:

GL-LS-12

The purpose was to examine if the unusual white-blueish glow of the GL-LS-4 could be reproduced. Sadly the GL-LS-12 cracked at the pinch seal.

The construction of the GL-LS-12 is fairly simple:

So what went wrong? During the pinch-seal process, the glass drops fixating the electrodes at a constant distance from each other melted and merged with the glass tubing too strongly such that tensions built up during the cool-down that eventually caused the seal to crack.
