In der Tat sind die Leuchtsymbole der B-50945 recht speziell. Das liegt daran, dass die NASA in den frühen Sechzigern diese Nixie-Röhren speziell bei Burroughs anfertigen ließ, um sie im Rahmen des BIOSATELLITE-Projektes im Primate Psychomotor Test System einzusetzen.

In diesem Programm wurden - wie in vielen anderen der NASA auch - Affen in die Erdumlaufbahn geschickt, um die Einflüsse des Weltraums auf einen menschenähnlichen biologischen Organismus zu erforschen. Um die Affen zu beschäftigen, und um ihre Leistungsfähigkeit unter Belastung zu erforschen, wurde das Primate Psychomotor Test Sytem (kurz PPTS) entwickelt.

Und das PPTS funktionierte so: Inmitten von vier B-50945 Nixies war eine fünfte eingebaut, diese leuchtete und zeigte ein Symbol an. Nach einer gewissen Zeit verlosch das Symbol, und nach einer kleinen Pause wurden auf die vier äußeren Nixies alle vier Symbole geschaltet, sodass nur eine der äußeren vier Nixies das vorherige mittige Symbol anzeigte. Der Affe musste nun mit dem Finger dasjenige Symbol auswählen, an das er sich erinnerte. Sensoren registrierten die Auswahl des Affen, und bei richtiger Wahl wurde das Tier mit Futter-Pellets belohnt.

Diese Nixies sind sehr selten, da sie nur in extrem begrenztem Umfang gefertigt wurden; leider fehlt auf meinem Exemplar die Typenbezeichnung, sodass ich mich bei meiner Spezifikation dieser Nixie als B-50945 auf die Aussage eines ehemaligen Mitarbeiters im PPTS beziehe. Wenn Sie Informationen zu der Röhre haben, wie etwa weitere Bilder, Fotos oder sogar ein Datenblatt, dann zögern Sie nicht, schreiben Sie mir bitte eine Email.

Leider besitze ich kein Datenblatt zur B-50945. Sollte jemand im Besitz dieses Datenblattes sein, würde ich mich über eine Mail diesbezüglich sehr freuen.

B-50945

The B-50945 from the American manufacturer Burroughs is a special symbol Nixie tube with a digit height of 15mm:

The B-50945 can display rather interesting symbols:

Indeed, the symbols of the B-50945 are rather special. That is because NASA had these tubes specially made by Burroughs in the early sixties, to use them in the BIOSATELLITE project, more specifically, the Primate Psychomotor Test System.

In this program, monkeys were sent into the earth's orbit while being constantly monitored. The purpose of these missions was to determine if there were any negative effects on a biological human-like organism when being sent to space. To keep the monkeys busy, and to test their capabilities under stress, the Primate Psychomotor Test Sytem (short: PPTS) was established.

This is how the PPTS worked: In the center of four B-50945 Nixie tubes a fifth Nixie tube was mounted that displayed a specific symbol. After some time the symbol faded out, and after some other time the outer four Nixie tubes displayed one symbol each, so that only one of the peripheral Nixie tubes showed the symbol that the center tube had displayed a minute ago. The monkey had to remember the first symbol and touch the specific Nixie tube. Sensors registered the selection, and the monkey was rewarded with extra food pellets if he had remembered correctly.

These Nixie tubes are very rare, since they only have been produced at a very low volume; sadly, my specimen is missing its type label, so that when specifying this tube as a B-50945, I have to rely on the statement of a former employee in the PPTS project. If you have information regarding this tube, such as other pictures or a datasheet, please do not hesitate to email me.
